What is a Scrap Quilt? How to Show Off your Unique Style! from Repro Quilt Lover

Scrap quilts are one of the most fun and creative ways to use your fabric stash! A scrap quilt is a style of patchwork quilt, usually pieced, made from many pieces of fabric in varying sizes and patterns. With endless possibilities, it is the perfect way to show off your unique style.

There is a lot of nostalgia associated with quilting and the romantic notion that quilts were made because families couldn’t afford to buy fabrics expressly for the purpose of making a quilt. Many think of scrap quilts as the result of a quilter fondly using leftover fabrics ...

The History of 1930s Fabrics from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

When engaged in a casual conversation about feedsacks with a non-quilter or someone new to the craft who might not be familiar with antique quilts, the picture that often comes to mind is a bag made of burlap, paper, or heavy canvas that has been filled with animal feed. For the lover of antique quilts and vintage fabric, the vision is quite different. Instead of paper or rough gunny sacks, we think of pretty, soft bags made of dress prints. Over the years, the word feedsack has become an all-inclusive term used for these charming fabric bags and a rich ...

Chaos Contained...Sort of from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

When the “stay at home” directive came, one of my (Kara) first thoughts was that I would have lots of time to stitch. I also thought that it would be a good time to do some cleaning out and organizing in the house, but especially in my sewing room. The weeks went by, and I kept waiting for that overwhelming organizing desire to hit—it never did. What did hit was the fact that my sewing space was so dis-organized that I couldn’t spend all that stay-at-home time stitching, because my space was so disordered.

The mess on ...

Pinwheel Quilt - The Fabrics and The Repair from Ann Quilts

This quilt measures a whopping 93" x 109" !  The blocks are about 11 1/4".  I think many of the fabrics date to the 1860s and 1870s.

The good news is that this quilt is a beloved family heirloom.  For amazing family story and photos of the four generations of women whose lives are intertwined with this quilt, read Pinwheel Quilt - The Family Story and Photos.

The sad news is that it is a victim of the caustic nature of early black and brown dye processes.  Many of the early dyes added metals like iron to ...

Itty Bitty Roses quilt from Pieced Brain

We've had beautiful Fall days in Utah with chillier weather, though this week the temperatures are back up into the 60s (F). Lest you think I am consumed by Christmas projects, here is a mini quilt I finished last week. It measures 12", the blocks are 2-1/2", and it shows off one of my favorite Fall fabrics!

I machine appliqued the tiny roses with matching thread and quilted it using monofilament and hearts. Hearts? Yeah, just to register the fact that I absolutely love this border fabric and this time of the year. Although the leaves on these ...

Missouri Star Shop Feature: Mercantile from The Cutting Table Quilt Blog - A Blog for Quilters by Quilters

As a woman in the modern world, my femininity sometimes craves the more elegant, lady-like ways of the past. I would love to enjoy a Friday night dinner in a nice evening gown or stroll into my local grocery store in a long Victorian dress without being given strange looks.

However, there are things I wouldn’t want to endure from those times like wearing cages to keep my dress looking fluffed and tight corsets that crush my ribs. No, thank you.

So I don’t want to live in the past ALL the time, but when I do, I ...

Little Hourglass Quilt from Repro Quilt Lover

Last post, I laid out goals and a plan for getting more projects to the completion stage.  Now is when I should probably report back on those but, ahem, I’m not ready.  Okay, I’ll be honest because both the goals and the plan accomplished what I hoped they would which was sticking to the same projects long enough to make progress on all three.

Three projects…contained by a box and by a plan.
